Selena Gomez is releasing a makeup line to coincide with her album Rare— and some aren't happy about it.
Gomez recently repurposed the Instagram account, which she had used to promote her Revival tour in 2016, for the upcoming makeup line, Rare Beauty. Some are upset because they believe this was done to create a false narrative that she gained those followers for the brand organically.
“I can't believe Selena Gomez took her old Revival Tour page that had almost 950k followers… changed it to Rare Beauty to feed the narrative that she gained this many followers this quick… I-” a Rihanna stan account wrote in a now-viral tweet.

One follower of the tour account–now Rare Beauty account–shared their confusion regarding the account switch.
“I think selena gomez hacked me and made me follow this account because i don’t remember following it at all,” they commented on one of the account's posts.
Another asked if the brand was “the official sponsor for the tour.”
Others aren't as concerned with the account switch. They just can't seem to wrap their heads around why Gomez is starting a makeup brand.
“Selena Gomez, queen of chapstick and mascara looks and being orange at the met gala, is starting a makeup line?” one user questioned. “Folks that's what we call a cash grab.”

Her inexperience as a beauty influencer and history of past blunders is the main sticking point for many online.
“Not Selena Gomez wanting us to buy her new makeup line when she showed up to the met gala looking like this,” another user tweeted, along with a photo of Gomez at the 2018 Met Gala, where a liberal application of spray tan left her with an orange tint.

Still, there are others questioning why “every celebrity” needs to release a makeup line–apart from Rihanna, who is known to be a makeup aficionado and has a beauty brand that is highly revered.
“I am so sorry, but why the fuck do all these celebrities want makeup brands,” Twitter user @__kgreene__ wrote. “I have never seen Selena Gomez express an interest in makeup lmfao the beauty industry is just a money grab at this point.”
